CHEST-MND

What is CHEST-MND?

CHEST-MND stands for Combined Hyperinflation and Expiratory Strength Training in People Living With Motor Neurone Disease. There is no placebo arm to this trial. All enrolled participants will commence a lung volume recruitment or expiratory muscle training program following a 5 week no intervention lead in period. 

How can I take part in this trial?

This trial is only being undertaken in Melbourne. 

Eligibility criteria

  • Probable or definite MND/ALS diagnosis in accordance with the El-Escorial criteria
  • Aged 18-90
  • Not using a ventilator or breathing machine
  • Have not previously tried lung volume recruitment or expiratory muscle training 
  • Forced vital capacity greater or equal to 50% 
  • Reside within two hours of Austin Health.
